Private tax practice

The most important document you sign all year.

Haven is how BrookHaven prepares it — CPAs, attorneys and trust specialists working one guided path from the first question to IRS acceptance, with your whole year, your whole household, in one quiet place.

Why Haven exists

Wealth deserves better than an inbox.

Most tax seasons are run out of email. Documents arrive as attachments, the same question gets asked twice, and nobody can say what is missing without opening four threads and a spreadsheet. For a W-2 year, that is an annoyance. For a household with a family trust, three K-1s that arrive in September and four states to file in, it is how things get missed — and how a family with every reason to expect better ends up asking, in April, where their return actually stands.

Firms live the same season from the other side: forty of those inboxes at once.

Haven replaces the pile with a path — eight stages, one place, everyone reading the same page.

How a year runs

Eight stages, and you always know which one you’re in.

Every return in Haven climbs the same eight stages, and you and your CPA are reading the same one at the same moment. Nothing advances silently. Nothing waits without a reason you can see.

  1. 01

    Account created

Your login, your household, your tax year.

  2. 02

    Questionnaire

530 questions exist. You see only the ones that apply to you.

  3. 03

    Documents

A checklist built from your answers. Photograph it or upload it — done.

  4. 04

    Review

A preparer works it. A reviewer checks it. A partner signs off.

  5. 05

    Video review

Your CPA walks you through the return on video, before anything is filed.

  6. 06

    Go file

You e-sign the 8879 — both spouses, wherever they are, if you file jointly.

  7. 07

    Filing

Your return is transmitted to the IRS.

  8. 08

    Accepted

Accepted. Refund tracked. Your records, downloadable, every year kept.

Extension

Need more time? An extension is a marked lane off the same path — filed, tracked, and rejoined when the return is ready. Not a dead end, and never a mystery.

Two desks, one file

The family sees one next step. The firm sees the whole book.

Same data, same instant, two different jobs — so each side gets an interface built for its own.

For families

One next step. Never a to-do list.

The client portal answers one question on every screen: what do you need from me right now. Everything else waits under “in progress” or “for your records” until it is your turn again.

Plate I · the client’s portal — one next step
  1. 01Browser and phone, in stepiPhone, Android and the web portal are the same product — photograph a 1099 at the kitchen table, finish the questionnaire on a laptop.
  2. 02English or Spanish, all of itNot a translated welcome screen — every stage, every question, every notice.
  3. 03Plain language, with the acronym underneath“A CPA is reviewing your return” — and 8879, AGI or K-1 explained wherever it appears.
  4. 04One conversation with your CPAMessages, attachments and every prior year in one place. Both spouses in the same thread.
  5. 05The number, when it is realYour refund or balance appears when the IRS accepts the return — never as a draft figure that moves.

For firms

The whole season, ranked by what is blocking it.

The work queue holds every open return with the reason it is waiting — and the review ladder will not let an e-signature packet leave until a partner has signed off.

Plate II · the firm’s queue — the whole book
  1. 01A work queue with real capacityEvery open return, ranked by what is blocking it, with open-returns-per-staffer alongside.
  2. 02One client, four tabs, no huntingOverview, return, filing, admin — with a “move this return forward” card that names the single next action.
  3. 03A review ladder that actually gatesPreparer to reviewer to partner sign-off — and an 8879 that cannot be sent until the partner has signed off.
  4. 04Season rollover in one passRoll the whole book into next year — answers, checklist, depreciation and carryforwards come along; joint households roll once.
  5. 05Multi-firm from the first line of codeEvery record carries its firm. One deployment serves many practices without them ever meeting.

Built for complicated

The things that make a return complicated are the things Haven is for.

A high-net-worth return is rarely one form. It is a household, an ownership tree, a handful of entities, a stack of K-1s that show up late, and four years of history that has to be right. Every one of those has a place here.

  1. 01Households

One account, two logins. Spouses filing jointly share a questionnaire, a document checklist and one thread — and the 8879 is not signed until both of them have signed it.

  2. 02Entities and trusts

S-corps, partnerships, LLCs and trusts with their ownership percentages mapped. The EIN is stored encrypted and shown in full only after you re-enter your password.

  3. 03The K-1s you are waiting on

Expected K-1s derive from the ownership tree, so a partnership that has not sent one is visible in November — not discovered on April 12th.

  4. 04Multiple states

Each state return tracked on its own, with its own filing status and its own deadline, next to the federal one.

  5. 05Last year, carried forward

Roll a client into the new season and the prior year’s answers, checklist, dependents and depreciation schedule come with them — nobody re-keys a thing.

  6. 06Estimated payments and depreciation

Four quarterly vouchers with due dates derived rather than stored, and depreciable assets that accumulate prior depreciation as the years roll.

  7. 07Amendments, notices, rejections

A 1040-X with its own signature, IRS notices logged, and a rejected e-file worked as a side track — none of which knocks the main return off its stage.

  8. 08Paying a balance due

Direct-debit authorization with the amount derived from the return itself, not typed in — and bank details encrypted the moment they are entered.

On “the biggest refund”

Built to miss nothing.

No honest firm promises a number it hasn’t seen. What we promise is the discipline better outcomes actually come from — every question asked before the season starts, three sets of eyes on every return, and nothing left to be discovered in April. Haven enforces that discipline in software, on every return, not just the ones prepared in a quiet week.

  1. 01

    Every question asked

The questionnaire holds 530 questions and shows you only yours. The follow-ups a rushed season never gets to are exactly where deductions live — so they are asked before the season starts, not remembered after it ends.

  2. 02

    Three sets of eyes

A preparer works it, a reviewer checks it, a partner signs it off — and the e-signature packet physically cannot leave the building until that sign-off is recorded.

  3. 03

    Nothing discovered in April

Expected K-1s are tracked from November, every deadline is derived rather than remembered, and an extension is a marked lane rather than an emergency.

If someone does promise you the biggest refund, ask them which of these three they skip.

Security

This is federal tax information. We build like it.

Social security numbers, employer identification numbers and bank details are not ordinary form fields. Every one of the controls below is in the running product, not on a roadmap.

  1. 01

    Encrypted at the field

AES-256-GCM on every SSN, EIN, routing and account number, under versioned keys that can be rotated without re-encrypting history. The database alone gives up nothing.

  2. 02

    A tamper-evident record

Every consequential action — a login, a document opened, a signature, a change of stage — is written to a per-firm hash chain. A row edited outside the application shows up as a break.

  3. 03

    Two factors, then a third

Time-based one-time codes at login for staff and clients alike — and a second password prompt in the moment before anything binding is signed.

  4. 04

    Firms never touch

Every record carries its firm, and every build runs an automated probe that tries several hundred cross-tenant requests as the wrong firm. A single success fails the build.

  5. 05

Nothing shown before it is true

The refund or balance figure is withheld until the IRS accepts the return — not hidden in the interface, but absent from the response the browser receives.

  6. 06

    Written to the standard

IRC §7216 consent captured as an append-only ledger, Publication 4557 safeguards, GLBA access logging, and WCAG 2.1 AA gated by the test suite rather than reviewed once.

Every claim in this section is asserted by the test suite that gates each build.

Havena BrookHaven product

BrookHaven Integrated Wealth Strategies

Built by the people who file them.

Haven is a product of BrookHaven Integrated Wealth Strategiesa practice that runs tax, legal and multi-family office as one team, for families and the businesses they own. The tax arm designed Haven around its own clients’ returns, because no software on the market handled a household with an ownership tree, four states and a September K-1 without falling back to email. Every stage on this page exists because a preparer here needed it.

Plain answers

Asked before you sign in.

Is my Social Security number actually safe?

Encrypted at the field with AES-256-GCM before it touches the database, decrypted only at the moment of use, and every look at it logged to a tamper-evident chain. The security section above names the rest — and every control listed there is in the running product.

Can my spouse and I share one account?

Yes — one household, two logins, each with its own password. You share one questionnaire, one checklist and one conversation, and a joint return waits for both signatures before it goes anywhere.

My return is complicated. Is this too simple for it?

Complicated is the design case: entities and trusts, expected K-1s, multiple states, estimated payments, depreciation, amendments and IRS notices all have a place. “Built for complicated” above is the full inventory.

Do I have to use a computer?

Phone, tablet or browser — same account, same place. Photograph a document at the kitchen table and finish on a laptop. All of it in English or Spanish.

What does it cost?

Haven comes with a BrookHaven tax engagement — [PRICING LANGUAGE — OWNER TO SUPPLY]. Start a conversation and we will quote your year, not a tier.

We are a firm. Can we run our whole book on it?

Haven is multi-tenant from the first line of code: every record carries its firm, every build runs hundreds of cross-tenant probes, and firms never see each other. The season tools — carryforward, bulk rollover, a capacity-aware work queue — are built in.
